Former prime minister Tony Abbott will tell the Alliance Defending Freedom group in the United States that allowing same-sex couples to wed will contribute to "the erosion of family" and urge policy makers to pass on the institution of marriage "undamaged" to future generations.
Fairfax Media revealed this week that Mr Abbott would travel to the US to speak on "the importance of family."
In the speech, set to be given in New York on Friday morning Australian time, Mr Abbott declared that "we need less ideology and more common sense" and reaffirmed his strong opposition to same sex marriage.
Mr Abbott drew on his own family's experiences by noting that two of his sisters are divorced and one is now in a committed lesbian relationship. But Mr Abbott still believes in the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
"We shouldn't try to change something without understanding it, without grasping why it is that one man and one woman open to children until just a very few years ago has always been considered the essence of marriage and the heart of family," Mr Abbott said in his prepared speech, as quoted by The Australian.
"We can't shirk our responsibilities to the future, let's also respect and appreciate values and institutions that have stood the test of time and pass them on, undamaged, when that's best. That's a goal we should all be able to share."
Mr Abbott said people should be respectful in the same-sex marriage debate, but that the consequences for the traditional family structure from changing the definition of marriage should not be ignored.
"Policymakers shouldn't be judgmental about people's personal choices but we can't be indifferent to the erosion of family given its consequences for the wider community," Mr Abbott said.
"It was my distinguished predecessor John Howard who pointed out that the traditional family was the best social welfare system that mankind has ever devised."
The Alliance Defending Freedom is a group of legal advocates in the US who defend children, family, marriage, the weak and the poor against the tyranny of intolerant ideologies such as that propagated by the LGBT movement. They are a strong voice for common-sense in the defense of traditional marriage and family which is under intense attack from the homosexual juggernaut.
Every child comes from and needs BOTH a mother and a father. Same-sex "marriage" intentionally keeps either a mother or a father from the child. Government should protect the child through upholding traditional marriage.
There is “a time to be silent, and a time to speak”. (Ecclesiastes 3:7). Now is the time to speak, so please speak up and defend children, truth and freedom. Craig Manners
“What the world needs most is a voice that courageously speaks the truth, not when the world is right, but a voice that speaks the truth when the world is wrong.” Fulton Sheen
True marriage offers true equality for children. Every child comes from and needs BOTH a Mum and a Dad. Every human being has dignity and deserves respect. All sorts of relationships can be respected at law without having to change marriage laws. In fact that has been the case legally for many years. The simple fact remains though that not every relationship is marriage.
